The ecological functionality of artificial pools in restored peatlands is poorly documented. In this study, we investigated arthropod assemblages of 21 artificial pools in a restored fen in southeastern Canada and 16 pools from four pristine fens as reference ecosystems. Three years following restoration, predacious diving beetles (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) and spiders (Araneae) were sampled within and around pools using minnow traps and pitfall traps, respectively.

| Study Area Description | This study was conducted in 2013 and 2014 in five fens of the Lower Saint-Lawrence, in eastern Canada (Table S1). The area is encompassed between the Saint-Lawrence River and the Appalachian Mountains and is characterized by a cool sub-humid climate (average annual temperature: 4.4 °C; average annual precipitation: 958.5 mm, with ca. 30% as snow; climate.weather.gc.ca). |

It was restored as a fen in 2009-2010, using the moss layer transfer technique (González & Rochefort 2014). Four pristine fens, chosen on the basis of their proximity to the restored site and the presence of pools, were used as reference ecosystems. |

Sampling took place during summer of 2013 and 2014 in a restored fen and four pristine fens in the Lower Saint-Lawrence (Bas-Saint-Laurent) region, Québec, Canada. We used pitfall traps to sample ground-dwelling spiders and minnow traps to sample dytiscid beetles.

Method step description:
- Pitfall traps were partly filled with water, propylene glycol and detergent, and were emptied once a week. Adult spiders were stored in 70% ethanol and identified to species based on Paquin & Dupérré (2003) and Dondale & Redner (1978, 1982, 1990, 1994). Dytiscid and spider specimens were deposited at the Montreal Insectarium.
