Description

The Jardin botanique de Montréal or Montreal Botanical Garden, is one of four municipal scientific museums committed to biodiversity and sustainable development. The botanical garden has approximately 22,000 taxa (species and cultivars) in culture in its 30 or so exterior thematic gardens and 10 exhibition greenhouses. The major exterior gardens include an arboretum, an alpine garden, a perennial and shade garden as well as Chinese, Japanese and First Nations Gardens. Greenhouses contain extensive orchid, aroid, begonia, gesneriad, bromeliad, succulent and fern collections. This dataset contains only the living and location non-sensitive specimens of the collection.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 24,583 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Geographic Coverage

The collection is worldwide in scope. Taxa of temperate climates are cultivated in the exterior gardens. Greenhouses support mostly humid tropical and succulent taxa. Specialty collections include wild collected Araceae from French Guyana, a recognized North American Plant Collection Consortium (NAPCC) botanical rose collection and a substantial orchid collection. American Begonia species are also well represented in the collections.

Sampling Methods

BG-Base is the database used by the Montreal Botanical Garden. Accessions qualified as alive as of January of the current year are extracted from the database. Excluded from this dataset are annuals as well as nursery cultivated material (for example seedlings).

Study Extent The data represents the living collections in culture at the Montreal Botanical Garden. The collection is therefore dynamic and is subject to constant change as accessions are removed (due to mortality for example) and new ones are added on a continual basis. The data will be updated once a year in January.
Quality Control Inventories are performed for most collections on an annual basis. Material is accessioned under the name it is originally received. Nomenclatural revisions are regularly undertaken to assure that the nomenclature of the material in culture reflects current knowledge. However, formal identification of the material in culture is not systematically done.
