Description
This dataset is an inventory of the 680,000+ vascular plant specimens of the Marie-Victorin Herbarium (MT). Bryophytes were not included in the inventory. The inventory was done in preparation for the move of the herbarium to the Université de Montréal Biodiversity Centre. Specimens were stored in 350 cases, each with 24 trays, holding one or more specimen folders. A folder contains specimens from the same genus and continent. North America is further divided in Canada, US and Central America. There are also separate folders for cultivated specimens. Specimens were counted per folder, so each record is a case-tray-genus-continent combination.
Data Records
The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 22,298 records.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Taxonomic Coverage
This inventory lists all vascular plant specimen folders of the Marie-Victorin Herbarium (MT); bryophytes were not included in the inventory. Specimen folders are identified to family or genus. The herbarium is organized following Christenhusz et al. (2011a) for lycophytes, Smith et al. (2006) for ferns, Christenhusz et al. (2011b) for gymnosperms and APG III (2009) for flowering plants at its new location. In the inventory we indicate the current family for each folder where possible.

Sampling Methods
Over the course of one summer, 36 volunteers inventoried all of the 22,000+ vascular plant specimen folders of the Marie-Victorin Herbarium (MT), in preparation of its move to the Université de Montréal Biodiversity Centre. They counted and pencilled the number of specimens per folder, the genus and continent/region written on the folder, and its location in the herbarium. The result was digitized to a spreadsheet.
Study Extent | All vascular plant specimens owned by the Marie-Victorin Herbarium (MT) in 2011. |
---|---|
Quality Control | All data was checked for errors, including typos, missed genera and dubious counts. As the herbarium is organized following Smith et al. (2006) for ferns and APG III (2009) for flowering plants at its new location, all genera were verified and updated where necessary. A family was assigned to each genus and a tray-case-number to each folder, to indicate its location in the collection. |
