Description

This is the first record of a gynandromorph for the North American native modest masked bee, Hylaeus modestus Say (Hymenoptera: Colletidae). It is also the first record of a gynandromorph for the subfamily Prosopis. It demonstrates bilateral asymmetry but with male genitalia. It was collected in Southern Ontario in June, 2018.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 1 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

The personnel involved in the project:

Sampling Methods

Specimen was found in a yellow pan trap laid on the ground 1.5 meters from field edge in an area of maximum forage regrowth.

Study Extent Site where specimen was found was sampled 3 times per summer for 3 years with blue, white and yellow pan traps as well as blue vane traps as part of wider research related to bee biodiversity in Ontario pasture lands.

Method step description:

  1. This specimen was found in a yellow pan trap that had been laid the ground 1.5 meters from field edge in an area of maximum forage regrowth.
  2. This specimen was stored in 70% alcohol until curation and identification.
  3. Identification and taxonomic classification followed Mitchell, T.B. 1960. Family Colletidae. Bees of the Eastern United States, I. The bee was examined on both sides and was consistent with a bilateral split of male and female characteristics but, with male genitalia.
